Tear sheets are critical in the modeling industry. By definition, a tear sheet is a term used by the modeling industry to denote a page cut or torn from a publication to prove to the client/agency that the model was published. Agencies often require models to provide tear sheets along with post analysis of any advertising campaign.

The tear sheet can provide the ‘big break’ for the new, aspiring model. From the client, to the model to the agent, tear sheets provide a true image proving the model has worked and been published, and establishes a clear image of what the model represents.

Once the model has established a book, new models often head to Europe (Italy, Greece, and France) to earn their tear sheets. Foreign projects are usually more attainable for new models, and this is where many earn their tear sheets, thus enabling new models to turn around and work in the United States.

Aspiring models have to realize how imperative tear sheets are. It takes hard work, dedication, and passion to often attain your first tear sheet. The demand by both the agent and the client, to review tear sheets, often provide a clear picture regarding the models image. Furthermore, not only do tear sheets prove that the model has successfully been published, it proves that the agency has successfully managed to get its models published in magazines, etc. Ask potential ‘agencies’ how many models have they gotten published? They should have the tear sheets to prove it!

Models proudly display their tear sheets within their portfolios, and agencies keep copies as proof that they have gotten their models work. This is where we say, ‘PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING’. So, when dealing with less know agencies
.ask them directly about their models and tear sheets! They should have them available for your review! If they can’t provide you tear sheets, you’re more than likely working with a bogus agency!

Remember, you can be told “you’re great”, or “you’re perfect”, or “we can make you a super-model”, but ask the right questions! Ask them about existing models they are working with, and find out where they’ve been published. Legitimate agencies will proudly provide you tear sheets as proof of their success!
